Huangshiba Formation

Huangshiba Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Latest Jurassic?, (TJ86)

Province:
Anhui

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Huangshiba in Huangshan Township, Chuxian County (now absorbed into Chuzhou district), easternmost Anhui Province. It was named by the Compiling Group for Anhui Regional Stratigraphic Scale, 1978, Regional Stratigraphic Scale of East China: Anhui Province, Beijing: Geological Publishing House. First appeared in a 1973 manuscript by Department of Geology of Nanjing University and No.811 Geology Team.

Synonym: Huangshiba Gr

Lithology and Thickness

Dark purple, grayish green andesite, agglomerate, with interbeds of tuffite, tuffaceous sandstone and conglomerate.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Former "red Chinese Lexicon" Jurassic stratigraphic column indicates it overlies a "Hoahongqiao Fm" of early-Late Jurassic; but this name (at least by this spelling) could not be found in Geol. Formation-names book or Google. Below that unit is a major unconformity onto Late Cambrian (Langyashan Fm).

Upper contact

Not given. Regionally, if this formation is uppermost Jurassic, then the next younger units would be the conglomerate of the Xihengshan Fm of earliest Cretaceous.

Regional extent

Not given.

Age

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Huangshiba Fm was Tithonian (used here). However, Zhou Taofa et al. (2008, Geochronology of the volcanic rocks in the Lu-Zong basin and its significance. Sci. China Ser. D-Earth Sci. 51, 1470–1482 (2008). https://doi.org/10.1007/s11430-008-0111-7) cite a SHRIMP date: "The zircon U-Pb LA-ICP MS age of the Huangshiba Group in Chu-Zhou basin is 132.9±0.9 Ma [reference to a publication by Zhang Q, et al., 2003, Science China Ser D-Earth Sci, 46(8): 830-837]; therefore, they concluded from regional SHRIMP (LA-ICP MS) U-Pb dating that :"There were no Jurassic volcanic activities in all the volcanic basins including the Lu-Zong basin in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River area." More details are needed on the current regional stratigraphy, and clarification of the names/descriptions of formations!
